Will Compete for the First Time in the Historic
24 Hour Race |
Buford, Ga. - Niclas
Jonsson will head to the 24 Hours of Le Mans for the first
time in his career this June in the world's most historic
race in the La Sarthe region of France. The ultimate test
of endurance and speed was first held on May 26 and 27,
1923 and has only been cancelled in 1936 due to economic
turmoil and from 1940 to 1948 during World War II. The
race is run on a semi-permanent track which, in its current
configuration, is 8.482 miles long. The circuit includes
many country roads that remain open to the public when
not in use for the race.
Jonsson, who also competes for Krohn Racing in the Grand
Am Rolex Series, also drives for Petersen White Lightning
in the GT2 class of the American Le Mans Series behind
the wheel of the No. 31 Porsche 911 GT3 RSR. The Swedish
native has joined the factory Porsche backed team for ALMS
endurance events as well as the 24 Hours in place of regular
driver Patrick Long who is driving for Penske Racing for
enduros in the LMP2 class of the ALMS and at Le Mans.
Jonsson will pilot the Porsche at Le Mans with co-drivers
Jorg Bergmeister and Tracy Krohn. The trio will attempt
to win the third GT2 class Le Mans title for the Petersen
White Lightning team in four years.
"I have competed professionally all over the world and in most of the
premier motorsports series and circuits," said Jonsson. "Le Mans
is something that I have always wanted to attempt and I can't think of any
better team to be with than Petersen White Lightning. The team has a lot of
experience at Le Mans and maintains a winning tradition. I hope that we can
bring back the Le Mans trophy to the team but I know it will not be easy. Le
Mans is not just about speed. It takes a huge amount of driver endurance as
well as strategy so we will just have to be prepared and have confidence that
we can go the distance."
